June 22nd Newsletter

Welcome to our 2011 season! We are excited to be starting deliveries, and look forward to having you all aboard this year.  Should you ever have any questions about veggies or anything, please do not hesitate to call [(920) 894-7196] or email us.

Vegetable Storage: Even though we rinse off most of the vegetables in your bags, in general, all of your veggies will benefit from being washed again  in cool water and placed in your refrigerator in a sealed container.  This will certainly help them last longer and stay fresher. There are a few items that this should not be done to and we will definitely let you know about these as they arrive in your bags.

The bag this week is perfect for making great SALADS. All of you have received at least three different varieties of lettuce. Tear, don’t cut, the lettuce to avoid browning of the leaves. Some ideas: Slice up the strawberries, snap peas, kohlrabi, and even a few scapes ( if you don’t mind a spicy taste) on the lettuce. Roast seeds or nuts in butter and salt, and add them. Garnish with dried or fresh fruit. Chop cooked chicken, beef, pork or other meats and top lettuce for a more filling salad. The possibilities are endless…

CILANTRO has a nice fresh taste, is frequently used in Mexican cooking (and other cuisines), and pares well with fish or chicken.  Snip it onto your salads for a fresh taste or mix it with butter and salt for a little herb butter to place on potatoes or bread or meat.

In regards to the SNAP PEAS in your bags this week, the whole pod can be eaten (except for the stem).  These are not shelling peas.

“What is this alien pod doing in my box?” might be another question you have this week.  Thankfully, it’s not a spaceship, it’s just KOHLRABI. J  Simply use a vegetable peeler or paring knife to remove the skin.  Then chop, slice, or shred the flesh and enjoy the slightly sweet, slightly cabbagey taste.  Try slicing it up (once it’s peeled) and serving it like carrot sticks.  Or cut up slices and put on your salad.  Or, if you prefer cooked food, make an au gratin with them (cheese and butter make every vegetable taste yummy J).

BREAD SAMPLES/ORDERS: In your bags this week are a few delicious samples from our new baker, Janet Malone.  Enjoy them, and if you are ever interested in ordering any breads, waffles, or bagels, please let me know by FRIDAY 8pm (for orders to be delivered the following WEDNESDAY). Checks can be left at the drop-site and should be made out to “Jacob or Heather Lambrecht”.

Our egg people are in desperate need of EGG CARTONS.  If you have ordered eggs, please return the cartons each week. Even if you have not ordered eggs, extra egg cartons are welcome (please place in Bag Return); instead of throwing them away, it’s a great way to reuse them.  Thanks so much!

Please return clamshells from STRAWBERRIES and PEAS when you are done with veggies (but only ones from Garden of Weedin’, not from the grocery store, please).  Thanks so much, dear subscribers!
